Costa Rica / choose your base

Costa Rica, a little slower.

A cloud forest worth lingering in. A coast that becomes your favourite chapter. Choose fewer places, stay a little longer, and make room for the days between the highlights.

Pura vida, one good day at a time.

The life between the landscapes

Leave a little room for Costa Rica.

The place you stay shapes more than your excursions. It shapes breakfast, the walk to lunch and the evening you decide to keep simple.

A table at a soda

A soda is a small local eatery. Leave room for a meal beyond the hotel; check what is open nearby.

Change the landscape, not the hotel every day

Forest, volcano and coast can make a rich trip. They become a rushed one when every morning begins with packing. Choose your anchors and leave space between them.

Volcano or cloud forest first

Compare La Fortuna and Monteverde by the activities you want, not as interchangeable green stops. Add both only when each has a clear role.

Build the rhythm

Pick the experience you most want to protect, then plan the second base around a verified transfer. A day spent changing landscapes is not also a full day of activities.

Coast with a real daily routine

A Pacific or Caribbean stay is a choice of address, meals and activities as well as scenery. Start with the coast that fits the rest of your route.

Build the rhythm

Ask where you would spend an ordinary day without an excursion. Compare beach access and the trip back to your departing airport; do not choose a coastline by a national weather slogan.

Nature with room for uncertainty

Choose an ecosystem and a programme, not a guaranteed animal sighting. Keep enough flexibility for weather or an activity change.

Build the rhythm

Use current park and operator information for entrances, reservations and restrictions. Have an alternative that still makes the day worthwhile; wildlife and trail access are never ours to promise.

Places with a purpose

See the place. Understand the stay.

Different experiences, with guides that explain the location trade-offs rather than simply collecting landmarks.

A reason to linger

Let the season shape your stay

Choose the experience first, then match the overnight base to it. Festival programmes and wildlife conditions need a fresh check for your dates.

Seasonal window; check local conditions

Uvita · Marino Ballena

August–October and December–April · seasonal context

The tourism board identifies two humpback-whale viewing periods around the South Pacific coast. Sightings, sea conditions and tour departures vary by date.

If whale watching is a main reason for the journey, compare a Uvita-area overnight base and the actual boat departure point before reserving. Confirm operator, park access, weather policy and return transport; a season is not a wildlife guarantee.

Tortuguero · green turtles

June–October · nesting-season context

SINAC describes June to October as Tortuguero's turtle-nesting season and requires its managed observation programme. Opening and animal activity must be reconfirmed.

Treat Tortuguero as its own overnight stop with boat access, not a quick excursion from La Fortuna. Check the licensed observation process, departure dock, weather and accommodation return before committing; nesting cannot be guaranteed.

San José · Festival de la Luz

December · recurring window, edition date to be confirmed

ICT lists a recurring San José festival. Its yearless calendar does not confirm a 2026 parade date.

If the parade is part of your trip, give San José its own overnight stop. It is not an evening activity based in La Fortuna, Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio; plan the next transfer separately.

Palmares · Fiestas

January · next programme to be confirmed

ICT's recurring calendar is context, not confirmation of a particular January edition.

Palmares is a separate Central Valley stop, not a La Fortuna neighbourhood. If it earns a place in the itinerary, confirm the actual programme and a dedicated return before fitting it between nature stays.

Before you commit
  • Verify the current programme or protected-area rules, access and operator terms before booking non-refundable travel.
  • Compare the exact room, cancellation terms and return journey after the experience.
  • Keep the arrival or transfer day free of an essential activity; a seasonal listing is not a transport or wildlife guarantee.

Choose the shape of the stay

Costa Rica changes with the base

Northern Plains

La Fortuna and Arenal combine volcano, hot springs and organised activities with dispersed lodging.

Monteverde

Cloud forest and wildlife with mountain-road and final-arrival trade-offs.

Central Pacific

Manuel Antonio and nearby bases mix park access, beach and a busy tourism corridor.

Guanacaste

A large coast where Papagayo, Tamarindo, Sámara and inland volcano areas are different trips.

Caribbean

Puerto Viejo, Cahuita and Tortuguero require distinct road, boat and community choices.

South Pacific

Uvita, Drake Bay and Osa bases reward longer stays and deliberate access planning.

How to decide

Build the route from real transfers

  1. 1

Choose two or three landscapes, not a nationwide checklist.

  2. 2

Give each base enough nights to absorb weather and activity timing.

  3. 3

Solve the final road, park access and early departure before paying.
