Where to stay in Costa Rica on a first trip

Build a two- or three-base route around landscapes and transfer reality.

Short answer

Start with the trip, not the postcard

For eight to ten days, combine La Fortuna with one coast, or La Fortuna, Monteverde and one Pacific base if the transfers work. Add Tortuguero or Osa only when their access and wildlife are central to the trip.

The places to compare

01

La Fortuna + Pacific coast

Best fit
Volcano, activities and beach in a clear two-base trip.
Trade-off
The coast choice still spans several hours and very different towns.
Move smart
Pick the exact beach region before booking either transfer.

02

La Fortuna + Monteverde + coast

Best fit
Three distinct landscapes in one classic route.
Trade-off
More packing and weather-sensitive road time.
Move smart
Use at least two nights per inland base and three on the coast.

03

Caribbean or South Pacific focus

Best fit
Wildlife, coast and a slower regional journey.
Trade-off
Access can involve boats, early departures or rougher roads.
Move smart
Let the remote region own more nights instead of adding it briefly.

Give each landscape enough usable time

Choose a coherent inland-and-coast combination before looking at room photographs. La Fortuna, Monteverde and a Pacific beach base are different arrivals and daily routines, not three stops to collect in any order. Mark changing-base days separately from activity days and work backwards from the airport you will leave from. For a short holiday, one inland base and one coast base can be more useful than extra check-ins. The right length is editorial advice, not an operator requirement or a guarantee of connections.

Give the middle of the trip some breathing room

Put the experience you most want into the plan first: volcano-area activities, cloud-forest time or a coast stay. Then ask what one additional landscape would add. The strongest short route may omit a famous stop if adding it means losing the only unhurried day at the destination that matters most.

Treat transfer days as their own days and leave some plans movable. A rainy period, a delayed arrival or a changed departure should not unravel every reservation that follows. This is editorial pacing advice, not a seasonal forecast or a claim that a particular road or shuttle will run on your dates.

Judge the stay by the day without an excursion

Imagine cancelling the outing and spending more time at the property. Can you reach a meal, rest comfortably and choose something else without a complicated journey? Compare the answer for a compact town address and a lodge whose services form part of the stay. Neither option wins automatically; the better one suits your preferred independence.

Before a non-refundable booking, ask what the room includes and how the next transfer is arranged. Check park access with the authority, activities with the operator and property details with the lodging. Keep those answers separate: a hotel description cannot confirm a protected-area opening, a wildlife encounter or permission to enter a restricted trail.

A reason to linger

Let the season shape your stay

Choose the trip first, then match the address to the event. A recurring festival is not a confirmed programme for your dates.

Next programme not confirmed

San José · Festival de la Luz

December · recurring window, edition date to be confirmed

ICT lists a recurring San José festival. Its yearless calendar does not confirm a 2026 parade date.

If the parade is part of your trip, give San José its own overnight stop. It is not an evening activity based in La Fortuna, Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio; plan the next transfer separately.

Before you commit
  • Verify the edition, venue and admission terms with the organiser before booking non-refundable travel.
  • Compare the exact room, cancellation terms and the return journey after the event.
  • Leave the arrival or transfer day free of an essential event; a festival listing is not a transport guarantee.

Decision rules

Use these to break a tie

  1. Two strong bases beat five check-ins.
  2. Transfer day is part of the itinerary.
  3. A national park is not automatically the best overnight base.

Before you book

Three checks

  • Confirm road, boat and shuttle times for the exact date.
  • Use official park booking rules.
  • Match airport choice to the first and last base.

Useful questions

What travellers usually need to know

How many places fit in ten days?

Usually three bases at most, with two being more relaxed.

Should I rent a car?

A car increases flexibility but is not mandatory; shared shuttles and buses can support a focused route.
